Project Information
As a vibrant and popular Japanese restaurant, Nishikian has become a household name within its neighbourhood that continues to draw in customers. The design has rejuvenated its local context, serving as a landmark food destination that has generated large amounts of attention, benefiting local businesses in the area. The design facilitates various dining experiences, encouraging large families as well as smaller gatherings seeking an intimate dining atmosphere. Nishikian's business has contributed to the escalated level of interest in the suburb.
The opening of Nishikian has brought a strong central hub to the area. The project brief was to repurpose an existing petrol station into a vibrant and welcoming izakaya restaurant. The client expressed a desire to create a space that had a warm and welcoming vibe, that would attract a broad spectrum of patrons. The concept sought to evoke a sense of warmth and excitement through a sense of texture through materiality. An open kitchen concept celebrates food in a relaxed and casual environment.
Nishikian brings a modern twist to long-established Japanese architecture. The objective was to create a space that encourages a diversity in demographics, whilst within a Japanese environment. The combination of sisal and traditional textiles serve as a contrast to the classic timber backdrop. These materials work together, to create a space rich in texture, tactility and cultural relevance.
The design stimulates the mind by evoking the look and feel of Japan through the clever use of movable screens. Clean, linear timber members contrast with deep blue acrylic to create a feature that offers homage to the restaurants cultural background. The screens provide the flexibility of creating dynamic seating arrangements.
