S Block was originally completed in 1992 at QUT’s Gardens Point campus. dwp|suters redevelopment of the building comprises new space planning and refurbishment of levels three to eight for the Faculties of Built Environment and Engineering and Science and Technology. The works include extensive upgrades to the base building services for compliance with current building codes. New planning solutions opened up the floors, bringing more natural light into the centre, whilst creating a collaborative, contemporary workplace for students and staff.
dwp|suters’ response to the existing architectural condition of exclusion breaks down the barriers of containment and redefines movement, to allow social interaction and peer based learning through a focus on day to day ‘events’. A single colour was introduced on each level to define vertical circulation and connection. Each floors identifiable colour association to promotes wayfinding without the use of signage. The S Block project is an example of client and project team working together to deliver an outstanding design outcome within a tight time frame through constant communication and feedback.
