WAIS is a new sports science, research and training facility for the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS), incorporating state of the art training and testing facilities for elite and developing Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth athletes. It features an indoor runway, rehabilitation facilities, a strength and conditioning gym, recovery pools, indoor sports hall, environmental and physiology laboratories and office accommodation. The new centre allows WAIS to work with more than 250 athletes in 13 dedicated sporting programs including cycling, swimming, gymnastics, track and field, hockey and kayaking as well individual athlete programs. WAIS is the national home of the training programs for pole vault and javelin.
Although at first glance the centre appears to be a facility dedicated solely to the development of elite athletes and the creation of Olympic champions, in fact the new centre, located at Challenge Stadium within Perth’s main sports precinct, will also nurture athletes aspiring for selection to state and national teams. dwp|suters worked with WAIS to create a community focused approach that extends the value of the facility as an enabler of broad societal benefits related to the health and fitness challenges of the Australian community, including research into sports technology and medicine. WAIS aims to encourage broad based participation in sports and wellness activities.
